What is FIRE?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It's a movement focused on extreme savings and investment to achieve financial freedom much earlier than traditional retirement age.
- Financial Independence (FI) - Having enough invested to cover your expenses indefinitely
- Retire Early (RE) - The option to stop working for money, often in your 30s-50s
- The 4% Rule - Withdraw 4% of your portfolio annually, which historically lasts 30+ years
The FIRE Formula
FIRE Target = Annual Expenses x 25
(Based on 4% safe withdrawal rate: 100% / 4% = 25)
Example: $40,000/year expenses = $1,000,000 target
(Based on 4% safe withdrawal rate: 100% / 4% = 25)
Example: $40,000/year expenses = $1,000,000 target
