Understanding Canadian Sales Tax
GST (Federal)
The Goods and Services Tax is a 5% federal tax that applies across all of Canada. It's charged on most goods and services sold in Canada.
HST (Harmonized)
The Harmonized Sales Tax combines GST and provincial tax into one. Used in Ontario (13%), and Atlantic provinces (15%). Simplifies tax collection.
PST/RST/QST (Provincial)
Provincial Sales Tax varies by province: BC (7% PST), SK (6% PST), MB (7% RST), Quebec (9.975% QST). These are charged separately from GST.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is HST and which provinces use it?
HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the federal GST with provincial sales tax into one single tax. Ontario uses 13% HST (5% federal + 8% provincial), while New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island all use 15% HST (5% federal + 10% provincial). This simplifies tax collection for businesses.
How do I calculate the pre-tax price from a total?
To find the pre-tax price from a tax-included total, divide the total by (1 + tax rate as decimal). For example, if the total is $113 and tax is 13% (0.13), divide $113 by 1.13 to get $100 pre-tax. The tax amount is $113 - $100 = $13. Use our "Remove Tax from Total" mode to calculate this automatically.
Which Canadian province has the lowest sales tax?
Alberta has the lowest sales tax in Canada at just 5% (GST only, with no provincial sales tax). The three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut) also only charge the 5% federal GST. The highest rates are in the Atlantic provinces with 15% HST.
Did you know?
- Quebec's QST (9.975%) is calculated on the price including GST, making it the only province where provincial tax is applied after federal tax.
- On a $100 item in Quebec: GST is $5, then QST is 9.975% of $105 = $10.47, for a total of $115.47 (not $114.975).
- Five US states have no sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon.
- Canada's GST was introduced in 1991 to replace the hidden Manufacturers' Sales Tax that was charged at the production level.
- The highest combined state and local sales tax in the US is in Louisiana, where some areas pay over 12%.
